“A Rotarian at work” in Lukwanga

Rotary, a global network of community volunteers is one of the largest and most influential international humanitarian service organizations worldwide. Rotary members, as volunteers, conduct projects to address today’s humanitarian challenges, including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns while encouraging high standards in all vocations. Rotary members strive to build goodwill and peace, and provide humanitarian service in their communities and throughout the world.

Rotarians around the world spent Saturday working at various community projects to better the places they call homes. Here Lukwanga the Rotary club of Kampala central joined hands with the Rotary Community Corps of Lukwanga to recognize the day (30^th/April/2011), also known as “Rotarian at work” in Lukwanga.

"We're really starting to see the impact of Rotarians at Work Day as more community members are flocking in for services" said Daisy Zzimbe, chair of the Lukwanga community corps (RCC) and focal group member Lukwanga maarifa center. "This provides a great opportunity to revitalize our club, attract new members, and generate publicity for Rotary and maarifa center at large."

With the main goal of addressing the existing health problems affecting people in the community, Rotarians were embedded with a task of addressing health issues in the community. This involved offering free services that included antenatal services; polio immunization among children aged 3 and below; HIV/AIDS testing and counseling; free de worming drugs.

In addition to offering de worming drugs, more than 32 members of the community were tested on HIV/AIDS, 24 adults and youths donated blood, 21 children were immunized and adults with high blood pressure tested. This however enhanced collaboration between the community group and the Rotary club of Kampala central whom of its members plagued assistance to the maarifa centre in the form of reading materials for the lower classes to enhance education levels in the area.
